In November 2025, OpenAI made headlines by giving ChatGPT Go free in India for 12 months. Millions of Indian users signed up, and "chatgpt go free india" is still one of the most searched AI terms in the country. But a lot has changed since then.

If you are trying to claim the offer today, or if you already claimed it and are wondering what happens next, this guide is for you. We explain what ChatGPT Go is, whether the free offer is still live, what Go includes in October 2026, how it compares with Plus, and how to avoid a surprise ₹399 charge when your free year ends.

Quick answer: No, ChatGPT Go is no longer free for new users in India. OpenAI's 12-month free promotion started on 4 November 2025 and ended on 21 January 2026. Users who redeemed it before that date keep Go free for 12 months, then pay ₹399/month unless they cancel. New users can use ChatGPT Free or buy Go at ₹399/month.

What is ChatGPT Go?

ChatGPT Go is OpenAI's low-cost paid plan. It sits between the free plan and ChatGPT Plus.

  • Launched in India first: OpenAI launched Go in India on 19 August 2025 at ₹399 per month including GST. It was the first ChatGPT plan built specially for India.
  • UPI support: At the same launch, OpenAI added UPI payments for ChatGPT subscriptions in India, so you could pay without a credit card.
  • Now global: Go later expanded to other countries and became available worldwide in January 2026, with a US price of $8/month.
  • What it promised at launch: Around 10x more messages, image generations and file uploads than the free plan, plus longer memory.

In simple words, Go is for people who hit the free plan's limits often but don't need everything in Plus.

Is ChatGPT Go still free in India?

No, not for new users. Here is the current situation as of 10 October 2026.

Who still has ChatGPT Go free?

If you redeemed the offer between 4 November 2025 and 21 January 2026, you keep your free 12 months. OpenAI does not take it back early because the promotion ended.

That means:

  • Someone who claimed on 4 November 2025 has free Go until around 4 November 2026.
  • Someone who claimed on 20 January 2026 has free Go until around 20 January 2027.

If you are in the first group, your free year ends in a few weeks. Read the section on what happens when your free year ends now.

Can I get ChatGPT Go free with a new email?

No. The promotion is closed for everyone, not just for one account. Creating a new email or phone number will not unlock it. OpenAI also limited the offer to one redemption per account, and creating fake accounts can break OpenAI's terms of use.

Timeline of the ChatGPT Go India offer

Here is how the story unfolded, so you can make sense of old YouTube videos and articles.

Date What happened
19 Aug 2025 ChatGPT Go launches in India at ₹399/month, with UPI payments
4 Nov 2025 OpenAI starts a 12-month free Go promotion for eligible users in India

Who was eligible for the free year?

According to OpenAI's offer terms, the promotion was open to users in India who were:

  • New to ChatGPT, or
  • Already on the free plan, or
  • Existing Go subscribers in good standing (they got 12 free months on their plan).

A payment method (card or UPI) was required to redeem, because the plan converts to a paid subscription after 12 months.

What ChatGPT Go includes in October 2026

Go has changed a lot since its 2025 launch. Here is what it looks like today.

Model: GPT-6 Luna

On 7 October 2026, OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6. According to its community announcement, Plus and higher plans get GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna from the following day. So Go and Free now use the same main model; Go simply gives you more of it.

Higher limits than Free

Go gives you more of these than the free plan:

  • Messages per day
  • Image generation
  • File and image uploads
  • Data analysis on spreadsheets
  • Memory and longer context

OpenAI does not publish fixed numbers for every limit, and limits can change with demand. Check OpenAI's pricing page (opens in new tab) for the latest comparison.

Features available on Go

  • Projects, tasks and custom GPTs (with storage limits)
  • Image generation and editing
  • Voice mode
  • Web search
  • Basic Thinking mode (the Think option) on GPT-6 Luna; adjustable thinking levels start with Plus

What Go does NOT include

  • GPT-6 Sol, the stronger model, is for Plus and above.
  • Advanced tools such as deep research at higher limits, agent mode and video generation are mainly on Plus and Pro. The exact split changes often, so check OpenAI's pricing page before you pay.
  • Ad-free experience. This is the big one.

Go now shows ads in India

Since 27 August 2026, logged-in adult users on ChatGPT Free and Go in India can see ads. OpenAI says ads appear below the answer, are clearly labelled as sponsored, and are kept separate from the AI's response. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans do not show ads.

If ads annoy you, Plus is the cheapest ad-free plan.

ChatGPT Free vs Go vs Plus

Here is a side-by-side view of the three personal plans most Indian users choose from.

Feature Free Go Plus

Main model (Oct 2026) GPT-6 Luna GPT-6 Luna GPT-6 Sol
Message limits Basic Higher Much higher
Image generation Limited More Most
File uploads Limited More Most
Memory Basic Longer Longest
Ads in India Yes Yes No
Advanced tools (deep research, agent) Very limited Limited Yes
UPI payment — Yes Yes

Who should pick which plan?

  • Free: Students and casual users who ask a few questions a day.
  • Go: Daily users who keep hitting limits, want more images and file uploads, and don't mind ads.
  • Plus: Professionals, content creators and developers who want the stronger GPT-6 Sol model, advanced tools and no ads.

Already claimed the offer? What happens when your free year ends

This is the most important section if you claimed the free year. Your plan does not simply stop. After 12 months, OpenAI will charge the regular Go price to the payment method you added, unless you cancel first.

Step 1: Check your renewal date

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web (chatgpt.com) and log in.
  2. Click your profile icon, then Settings.
  3. Go to Account (or Subscription).
  4. Look for your plan name (Go) and the renewal date.

On the app, open your profile or Settings and look for your plan details. Menu labels can vary between app versions.

Step 2: Decide if you want to keep paying

Ask yourself:

  • Did I actually hit the free plan limits in the last month?
  • Do I use image generation or file uploads often?
  • Would I pay ₹399/month for this?

If the answer is no, cancel. You will drop back to ChatGPT Free and keep your chats.

Step 3: Cancel before the renewal date (if you want)

How you cancel depends on where you subscribed:

  1. Subscribed on the web (card or UPI): Settings → Account → Manage → Cancel plan.
  2. Subscribed through Google Play: Play Store → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel subscription.
  3. Subscribed through the App Store on iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel Subscription.

Cancel at least 2–3 days before the renewal date to be safe. After cancelling, you usually keep Go until the end of the current period.

Step 4: Check your UPI AutoPay mandate

If you paid with UPI, a recurring UPI AutoPay mandate may have been created. You can view and cancel it in your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or BHIM) under AutoPay or Mandates. Cancelling the plan in ChatGPT should stop billing, but checking the mandate gives you extra peace of mind.

What if I was already charged?

If you were charged ₹399 after forgetting to cancel:

  • Cancel immediately so you are not charged again next month.
  • Log in with the charged account, open OpenAI's Help Center and request a refund through the chat widget. OpenAI says most payments are non-refundable, though it reviews cases such as billing errors and unauthorised charges, so a refund is not guaranteed.
  • If you paid through the App Store, request the refund from Apple. For Google Play payments, OpenAI's refund article says to use the same Help Center chat.

How to buy ChatGPT Go in India today

If you want Go now, the process is simple.

  1. Open chatgpt.com (opens in new tab) or the ChatGPT app and log in.
  2. Tap Upgrade or your profile icon → Upgrade plan.
  3. Choose Go (₹399/month).
  4. Pay with UPI, debit/credit card, or Google Play/App Store billing.
  5. Confirm. Go features unlock right away.

Tip: Paying on the web is often slightly simpler for cancelling later, while paying through Google Play keeps all your subscriptions in one place. App store prices can sometimes differ from web prices, so check the amount on the checkout screen before you confirm.

Is ChatGPT Go worth ₹399 a month?

₹399 is about the price of a mid-range OTT subscription. Whether it's worth it depends on your use.

Go is worth it if you:

  • Use ChatGPT every day for study, work or content and keep hitting the free limits.
  • Generate images or upload PDFs and spreadsheets often.
  • Want longer memory so ChatGPT remembers your preferences.

Go is NOT worth it if you:

  • Ask only a few questions a week. Free is enough.
  • Hate ads. Go still shows them in India.
  • Need the strongest model or advanced tools for professional work. Plus is better value for you.

Cheaper or free alternatives to consider

  • Google AI Plus also costs ₹399/month, includes 400 GB storage, and is free for one year for college students who redeem by 31 December 2026. See our guide on Gemini Pro free for students in India.
  • Jio users on eligible plans on a ₹349 or higher unlimited 5G plan can still get Google AI Pro free for 18 months through MyJio as of October 2026. Check Jio's offer page (opens in new tab) for current terms.
  • Claude Free and Gemini Free are strong free options for writing and quick questions.
  • Airtel users should note that the free Perplexity Pro deal has also closed; our Perplexity Pro free Airtel guide explains what still works.

Beware of fake "free ChatGPT Go" offers

Because the real offer was so popular, scammers are still using it as bait. Watch out for:

  • WhatsApp or Telegram messages saying "Claim ChatGPT Go free till 2027" with a link. OpenAI does not send offers through random WhatsApp forwards.
  • Fake websites that look like chatgpt.com and ask for your OpenAI password or card/UPI PIN.
  • "Free Go account" sellers who share one login with many people. These accounts get banned, and your chats are visible to strangers.
  • APK files of "ChatGPT Go Pro Mod". These can contain malware that steals OTPs and banking data.

Remember: You never need to enter your UPI PIN to receive anything. If you were cheated, report it at cybercrime.gov.in (opens in new tab) or call 1930. Our guide on how to report cyber fraud online in India walks you through the process.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT Go is not free for new users in India anymore; the 12-month promotion ended on 21 January 2026.
  • People who redeemed it between 4 November 2025 and 21 January 2026 keep Go free for 12 months from their claim date.
  • After the free year, Go renews at ₹399/month unless you cancel; earliest claimers hit renewal from November 2026.
  • Go now runs GPT-6 Luna with higher limits than Free, but shows ads in India.
  • Plus (GPT-6 Sol, no ads) is the next step up; Google AI Plus is the main ₹399 rival and is free for students.

Conclusion

The ChatGPT Go free India offer was one of the biggest AI giveaways the country has seen, but it closed for new users on 21 January 2026. If you claimed it, enjoy it, and set a reminder to decide before your free year ends so ₹399 isn't charged by surprise. If you missed it, ChatGPT Free is still very capable, and Go at ₹399/month is a reasonable upgrade if you hit limits daily.
