Based on traditional Vedic astrology rules, for guidance only. A name gives a rough birth star; your true rashi and nakshatra come from the Moon’s position at birth.

What a nakshatra is

A nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions that Vedic astrology divides the sky into, each 13°20′ wide. The one the Moon was in when you were born is your janma nakshatra, or birth star. Each nakshatra splits into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′, which gives 108 padas in all.

By tradition, every pada has a starting syllable. At the naamkaran, many Hindu families name a baby with the syllable of their birth pada. That custom is why the first sound of a name can point back to a nakshatra.

What the result shows

Result What it means
Nakshatra and pada Your birth star and which of its four quarters your name sound falls in
First sound The syllable the tool read from your name, in English and Hindi, so you can check it
Rashi The Moon sign that pada belongs to. Some nakshatras span two rashis.
Nakshatra lord The planet that rules the nakshatra in the Vimshottari dasha system
Gana Nature: Deva (gentle), Manushya (human) or Rakshasa (fierce). Worth 6 points in gun milan.
Yoni The animal symbol of the nakshatra. Worth 4 points in gun milan.
Nadi Aadi, Madhya or Antya. Worth 8 points in gun milan; the same nadi for both people is called Nadi dosha.

When a nakshatra spans two rashis, its first padas fall in the first rashi and the rest in the next. Krittika pada 1 (A) is Mesha, for example, while padas 2 to 4 (I, U, E) are Vrishabha. The lords repeat in a fixed cycle of nine: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury.

Gana, yoni and nadi of each nakshatra

These three traits carry 18 of the 36 points in kundli matching, so this is the table to check if you are comparing two birth stars.

Nakshatra Gana Yoni Nadi
Ashwini Deva Horse Aadi
Bharani Manushya Elephant Madhya
Krittika Rakshasa Sheep Antya
Rohini Manushya Serpent Antya
Mrigashira Deva Serpent Madhya
Ardra Manushya Dog Aadi
Punarvasu Deva Cat Aadi
Pushya Deva Sheep Madhya
Ashlesha Rakshasa Cat Antya
Magha Rakshasa Rat Antya
Purva Phalguni Manushya Rat Madhya
Uttara Phalguni Manushya Cow Aadi
Hasta Deva Buffalo Aadi
Chitra Rakshasa Tiger Madhya
Swati Deva Buffalo Antya
Vishakha Rakshasa Tiger Antya
Anuradha Deva Deer Madhya
Jyeshtha Rakshasa Deer Aadi
Mula Rakshasa Dog Aadi
Purva Ashadha Manushya Monkey Madhya
Uttara Ashadha Manushya Mongoose Antya
Shravana Deva Monkey Antya
Dhanishta Rakshasa Lion Madhya
Shatabhisha Rakshasa Horse Aadi
Purva Bhadrapada Manushya Lion Aadi
Uttara Bhadrapada Manushya Cow Madhya
Revati Deva Elephant Antya

A Rakshasa gana is a label from tradition, not a judgement of character. It only affects how many Gana points two people get in matching.

Worked examples

Neha starts with Ne (ने), the fourth syllable of Anuradha. So Neha is Anuradha nakshatra, pada 4, in Vrischika rashi. Anuradha is ruled by Saturn, is Deva gana, has the deer as its yoni and sits in Madhya nadi.

Rahul starts with Ra (रा), the third syllable of Chitra. So Rahul is Chitra nakshatra, pada 3, in Tula rashi, ruled by Mars, Rakshasa gana, tiger yoni and Madhya nadi.

Neha and Rahul share Madhya nadi, so a gun milan between these two names would show Nadi dosha. That is the kind of detail this table lets you spot before you run the kundli matching by name tool.

How English spellings are read

English letters can hide the sound. “Na” could be न (Anuradha) or ण (Hasta), and “Ta” could be त (Swati) or ट (Purva Phalguni). The tool reads the soft sound most Indian names use and adds a note with the other nakshatra when it differs. Typing the name in Hindi (नेहा) removes the doubt.

  • Joined consonants are read up to the first vowel: Krishna is “Ki” (Mrigashira 4), Priya is “Pi” (Uttara Phalguni 4).
  • Sh is read as ष, Hasta pada 2. B is read as व, so Babita is Rohini.
  • All names starting with A (Aarav, Amit, Ananya) fall in Krittika pada 1, which is why so many people get the same result.

Name nakshatra vs birth nakshatra

Your real janma nakshatra comes from the Moon’s exact position at birth, worked out from your date, time and place of birth. The Moon moves through one nakshatra in about a day, so even the birth date alone is not always enough.

A name gives the same nakshatra only if it was chosen from your birth syllable. If your family followed that custom, or you have a separate janma naam, the name result is a good guide. Otherwise, use your birth chart for anything important, and treat this tool as a way to learn the system.

The same chart works in reverse for baby names: find the baby’s birth nakshatra and pada, then pick a name that starts with that pada’s syllable. For the Moon sign view of the same chart, see rashi by name, and for a number-based reading of a name, try the numerology calculator.

FAQ

Nakshatra by Name FAQs

How do I find my nakshatra by name?

Find the first syllable of your name in the nakshatra chart. Each nakshatra has four syllables, one per pada; Chu, Che, Cho and La, for example, are Ashwini. Type your name above in English or Hindi, and the tool shows your nakshatra, pada, rashi, lord, gana, yoni and nadi in one go.

What is a nakshatra pada?

A pada is one of four equal quarters of a nakshatra, each 3°20′ of the sky. The 27 nakshatras have 108 padas in total, and each pada has its own name syllable. The pada also decides the rashi when a nakshatra spans two signs, as Krittika, Mrigashira and Chitra do.

Is nakshatra by name accurate?

Nakshatra by name is accurate only if your name was chosen from your birth syllable, as many Hindu families do at the naming ceremony. Your true birth nakshatra comes from the Moon’s position at the exact time and place of your birth. Without that link, treat the name result as a traditional guide, not your real birth star.

What is the nakshatra lord?

The nakshatra lord is the planet that rules a nakshatra. The nine lords repeat in a fixed order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury, starting from Ashwini. In the Vimshottari dasha system, your birth nakshatra’s lord sets the first planetary period of your life.

What are gana, yoni and nadi?

They are traits of each nakshatra used in kundli matching. Gana is nature (Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa), yoni is one of 14 animal symbols, and nadi is one of three groups. Together they carry 18 of the 36 gun milan points: 6 for gana, 4 for yoni and 8 for nadi.

Which nakshatra is for names starting with A?

Names starting with A (अ), such as Aarav, Amit or Ananya, fall in Krittika nakshatra pada 1, in Mesha rashi. Names starting with I, U and E are Krittika padas 2, 3 and 4, in Vrishabha rashi. Names starting with O are Rohini pada 1. Long vowels like Aa and Ee count the same as short ones.

Can I type my name in Hindi?

Yes, and Hindi is the most exact way. Hindi script shows the precise sound, such as ट or त, which English writes the same way, and these often belong to different nakshatras. The tool also handles joined letters, so प्रिया is read from पि and क्षमा from क.

Is my name saved?

No. The nakshatra by name tool runs entirely in your browser, so the name you type is never sent to our servers or stored anywhere. There is no sign-up. Refreshing the page clears everything, so you can look up family members’ names or baby name ideas privately.
