WebP to JPG
Convert WebP images to JPG that open in every app and upload form, in bulk and without uploading.
What WebP is and why you keep getting it
WebP is an image format made by Google for the web. It can be lossy like JPG or lossless like PNG, and it supports transparency and animation. Google’s own figures (opens in new tab) say lossy WebP files are 25 to 34% smaller than comparable JPGs, and lossless WebP files are 26% smaller than PNGs.
Smaller files mean faster pages, so shopping sites, news sites and search results now serve WebP. When you right-click and save an image, your browser saves the file the site sent, which is often a .webp. Then the trouble begins: an older photo editor won’t open it, a print shop asks for JPG, or a job or exam portal says “only JPG/JPEG allowed”.
Renaming photo.webp to photo.jpg doesn’t fix it. The name changes, but the data inside is still WebP, and a strict form or app will still reject it. You need a real conversion, which is what this tool does.
How to convert WebP to JPG
- Drop your WebP files into the box above, or click to browse. You can add as many as you like.
- Set the Quality slider. It runs from 10% to 100% and starts at 90%.
- Pick a Background colour. JPG can’t store transparency, so any see-through areas are filled with this colour. White is the default.
- Conversion runs on its own. Change the quality or colour and the images update.
- Download each JPG, or click Download all (ZIP). Names stay the same, so banner.webp becomes banner.jpg.
Transparent WebP images
WebP can have transparent areas, such as a logo or a product cut-out with no background. JPEG has no alpha channel (opens in new tab), so those pixels need a colour. Many converters fill them with white without asking. This one lets you choose.
- White: right for documents, forms and most product photos.
- Your brand or slide colour: makes a logo sit cleanly on a coloured slide or poster.
- Need to keep the transparency? Don’t use JPG. Convert to PNG with the image converter instead.
Picking the right quality
Both WebP and JPG are usually lossy, so each conversion loses a little detail. Starting at 90% keeps that loss invisible for nearly every image.
| Quality | What to expect | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| 90 to 100% | No visible change; largest files | Printing, editing, keeping an archive |
| 75 to 85% | Hard to spot a difference; much smaller | Email, chat apps, slides, blog posts |
| Below 70% | Blur and blocky patches in skies and gradients | Only when a form has a tight KB limit |
Expect the JPG to be bigger than the WebP at the same visual quality. That’s the 25 to 34% saving that made sites choose WebP in the first place. If an upload form caps the size, use the image resizer with a target size in KB rather than dragging the slider down by guesswork.
Why convert here instead of on an upload site
Your images are converted inside your browser tab. They don’t go to a server, so there’s no upload wait, no queue and no file size cap set by us. Here’s what popular upload-based converters stated on their own pages as of October 2026:
| Tool | How it works | What their page states |
|---|---|---|
| This converter | In your browser | Images never leave your device |
| ezgif | Upload to their servers | Max file size 200 MB; uploads deleted 1 hour after upload |
| Convertio | Upload to their servers | 1 GB maximum; uploads deleted after conversion, outputs purged within 24 hours |
Limitations
- Animated WebP: only one frame is saved, the image the format marks as its default or else the first frame. That’s how browsers draw animated images onto a canvas (HTML standard (opens in new tab)).
- No transparency in the output, because JPG doesn’t support it. Pick the background colour carefully.
- Metadata is dropped. The JPG doesn’t carry EXIF details from the original.
- Same pixel size. The tool converts the format only. To change dimensions, use the resizer or the bulk image resizer.
Key facts
- WebP lossy images are 25 to 34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality. (Google for Developers (opens in new tab))
- WebP lossless images are 26% smaller than PNGs. (Google for Developers (opens in new tab))
- Both lossless and lossy WebP support transparency, and animated WebP supports lossy, lossless and transparent frames. (Google for Developers (opens in new tab))
- WebP stores width and height in 14 bits, which caps an image at 16,383 pixels on each side. (WebP FAQ (opens in new tab))
- WebP is supported in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari. On a Mac, Safari needs version 14 and macOS Big Sur or later. (MDN (opens in new tab))
FAQ
WebP to JPG FAQs
How do I convert WebP to JPG for free?
Drop your WebP files into the converter above, set the quality and background colour, and download the JPGs. It is free, needs no account, and has no daily limit. Several files can be converted at once and saved as a ZIP. Your images are converted in the browser, so nothing is uploaded.
Why do images save as WebP from Chrome?
Chrome saves the file the website sent, and many sites send WebP because it is 25 to 34% smaller than a comparable JPG. The browser doesn’t change the format when you save. To get a JPG, convert the saved .webp file with a tool like this one.
Can I just rename .webp to .jpg?
No. Renaming changes only the file name, not the data inside. The file is still WebP, so apps and upload forms that check the real format will reject it or fail to open it. A converter decodes the WebP image and saves it again as a true JPG file.
Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?
A little, because JPG is lossy and the image is encoded again. At the default 90% quality the change is invisible for almost every image. Avoid converting the same image back and forth many times, since each lossy save drops a bit more detail. Keep the original WebP if you may need it later.
What happens to transparent areas in a WebP?
They are filled with the background colour you pick, white by default. JPG has no transparency, so every pixel needs a solid colour. Choose a colour that matches where the image will sit, such as your slide background. If you must keep transparency, convert the WebP to PNG instead.
Can I convert animated WebP to JPG?
Only as a single still image. JPG can’t hold animation, so the tool saves one frame: the image the file marks as its default, or the first frame. Check the preview before downloading to make sure that frame works for you.
Is WebP better than JPG?
For websites, usually yes. Google’s figures show WebP is 25 to 34% smaller than JPG at similar quality, and it supports transparency and animation. For sharing, printing and upload forms, JPG is safer because almost every app and portal accepts it. Use WebP on the web and JPG everywhere else.
Is it safe to convert WebP to JPG online?
Yes, with this tool, because the images never leave your device. The conversion happens inside your browser tab, so there is no upload and no copy on a server. Upload-based converters state they delete files after a period, such as one hour. Here, there is nothing to delete.
