PNG to JPG

Convert PNG images to smaller JPG files, choose the quality and fill transparent areas with any background colour.

JPG PNG to JPG Files never leave your device

What happens when you convert PNG to JPG

Your PNG is redrawn on a canvas at its original width and height, then saved again as a JPG with the quality you choose. Two things change in that step.

  • Compression becomes lossy. PNG stores every pixel exactly. JPG throws away fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which is why the file gets so much smaller. (MDN (opens in new tab))
  • Transparency is removed. JPEG has no alpha channel, so it has no way to store a see-through pixel. (MDN (opens in new tab))

The tool handles the second point for you: it paints the whole image area with the background colour you pick (white by default) and draws your PNG on top. Fully transparent areas take that colour. Soft edges and shadows that were partly transparent blend into it, which is why picking the right colour matters.

How to use the PNG to JPG converter

  1. Drop one or more PNG files into the box above, or click browse. Only PNG files are accepted here.
  2. Move the Quality slider. It runs from 10% to 100% and starts at 90%.
  3. Pick a Background (for transparency) colour. Leave it white for documents and forms, or match the page or slide the image will sit on.
  4. The JPG appears with its size in pixels and KB. Change any setting and it converts again on its own.
  5. Click Download. With two or more files, use Download all (ZIP) to get them in one go.

Real results from our test

We ran three different PNGs through this tool on 19 October 2026 in a Chromium browser. Sizes can shift slightly in other browsers, because each browser ships its own JPG encoder.

PNG file Original size JPG at 90% JPG at 75% Verdict
Photo-style landscape wallpaper, 1920 × 1920 px 3.30 MB 160.6 KB 81.1 KB Convert. About 95% smaller at 90%.
Web screenshot, 1200 × 675 px 430.9 KB 178.3 KB 126.2 KB Convert if size matters. Check text stays sharp.
Flat logo on transparent background, 800 × 800 px 9.3 KB 20.7 KB Not tested Keep the PNG. The JPG is bigger and loses transparency.

The logo result surprises most people. PNG compresses large areas of one flat colour very well, while JPG works in small blocks and spends bytes on every edge. For logos, icons and simple graphics, a JPG can end up larger than the PNG you started with.

At 60% the same image dropped to 59.4 KB. Below about 70%, look closely at sky, skin and text, since that is where blocky patches and halos show up first.

Which quality setting to pick

Quality Good for
90% to 100% Printing, sending to a designer, or any image you may edit again.
75% to 85% Websites, blog images, email attachments and WhatsApp.
60% to 70% Thumbnails and previews where small size beats fine detail.
Below 60% Only when a strict KB limit leaves no other choice.

If a form or portal sets an exact KB limit, the image resizer has a target size box that finds the highest quality under your limit for you.

When to convert PNG to JPG, and when not to

Convert when the PNG is a photo, a scanned page or a screenshot full of gradients and you need a smaller file. Many Indian exam and government portals accept only JPG or JPEG uploads, so a PNG photo or signature often has to be converted before you can submit. Check the exact format and size in the official notification before you upload.

Keep the PNG for logos, icons, line drawings, charts and anything that needs a transparent background. Converting those gives you a bigger or blurrier file and no benefit.

PNG vs JPG at a glance

Feature PNG JPG
Compression Lossless Lossy
Transparency Yes, full alpha channel No
Best for Logos, screenshots, diagrams, line art Photos and other continuous-tone images
Typical size for a photo Large Small
Quality loss on re-save None Some, each time

Limitations

  • No transparency in the output: this is a limit of the JPG format itself. If you need a see-through background, keep the PNG or use WebP in the image converter.
  • Same pixel size: the JPG keeps the PNG’s width and height. To make it smaller in pixels, use the image resizer or the bulk image resizer.
  • Metadata is not copied: text notes and other extra data stored inside the PNG are not carried into the JPG.
  • Browser memory: very large images can hit your browser’s canvas size limit. The tool shows an error if that happens.

Key facts

  • PNG is defined as a format for the lossless storage of raster images. The current version is the Third Edition, a W3C Recommendation published on 24 June 2025. (W3C (opens in new tab))
  • In PNG, an alpha value of zero means fully transparent. (W3C (opens in new tab))
  • JPEG is the most widely used lossy format for still images and does not support an alpha channel. (MDN (opens in new tab))
  • Browsers save canvas images to JPG with a quality value between 0 and 1. This tool maps its 10% to 100% slider onto that value. (MDN (opens in new tab))

FAQ

PNG to JPG FAQs

How do I convert PNG to JPG without losing quality?

Set the quality slider to 95% or 100%. JPG is always lossy, so some detail is discarded, but at those settings the change is very hard to see. Our 3.30 MB photo-style test image was 160.6 KB at 90% and looked the same at normal size. Do not convert the same file back and forth, because each JPG save loses a little more.

What happens to the transparent background when I convert PNG to JPG?

It is filled with the background colour you choose, white by default. JPG has no alpha channel, so it cannot store see-through pixels. Partly transparent edges, like soft shadows, blend into that colour. Pick a colour that matches where the image will be used, or keep the PNG if you need real transparency.

Why is my JPG bigger than the PNG?

Your PNG is probably a logo, icon or simple graphic with large flat colours. PNG stores those very efficiently, while JPG spends bytes on every edge. In our test, a 9.3 KB logo PNG became a 20.7 KB JPG. For photos it goes the other way: a 3.30 MB photo-style PNG became 160.6 KB.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser using the canvas feature that every modern browser has. Your PNG files are read on your device and the JPG is created there, so nothing is sent to Technical Adda or anyone else.

Can I convert many PNG files to JPG at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many PNG files as you like and each one is converted with the same quality and background settings. When more than one file is ready, a Download all (ZIP) button appears so you get every JPG in a single file. Very large batches depend on your device memory.

Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes, JPG and JPEG are the same format. The shorter .jpg extension comes from old DOS and Windows file names, which allowed only three letters after the dot. Any portal that asks for JPEG will accept a .jpg file from this tool, and the other way round, because the data inside the file is identical.

What quality should I use for a website or WhatsApp?

Use 75% to 85% for websites, blogs and messaging apps. In our test, a 1920 × 1920 photo-style image was 81.1 KB at 75%, half the size of the 90% version, with little visible change. Go higher only if you plan to edit or print the image later.

Can I convert JPG back to PNG later?

Yes, with the JPG to PNG converter, but it will not bring back what was lost. The PNG keeps the JPG exactly as it is, including any compression marks, and the transparent background does not return. If you may need the original later, keep a copy of the PNG before converting.
