How to make a photo collage

  1. Click browse and select two or more photos together, or drop them into the box above.
  2. Leave Columns on Auto or choose 1 to 6.
  3. Pick a Tile shape: Square, Landscape 4:3, Portrait 3:4 or Wide 16:9. Every tile in the grid uses this shape.
  4. Set the Spacing between photos, from 0 to 60 px (12 px by default), and pick a Background colour for the gaps.
  5. Type the Collage width in pixels. It starts at 1800. The height is worked out for you.
  6. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP under Convert to, and the quality for JPG or WebP (90% by default). The collage redraws each time you change a setting.
  7. Click Download to save it as “collage” with the format you chose.

How the grid is laid out

Photos fill the grid from left to right, then top to bottom, in the order your device passes them to the browser. There is no drag-to-reorder yet, so if order matters, name your files 01, 02, 03 and so on before picking them. File pickers usually list files by name.

On Auto, the tool uses the square root of the photo count, rounded up, as the number of columns. That keeps the grid close to square.

Photos Auto columns × rows Empty cells No-gap alternative
2 2 × 1 0 Already full
3 2 × 2 1 3 columns
4 2 × 2 0 Already full
5 3 × 2 1 5 columns (one strip)
6 3 × 2 0 Already full
8 3 × 3 1 4 columns
9 3 × 3 0 Already full
10 4 × 3 2 5 columns
12 4 × 3 0 Already full

Empty cells sit at the end of the last row and show the background colour. If that looks unfinished, set Columns to a number that divides your photo count exactly.

Each photo is cropped from its centre to fill its tile, so nothing is stretched. The catch: a tall portrait photo in a Wide 16:9 tile loses its top and bottom, which can cut off heads. Match the tile shape to most of your photos. Portrait 3:4 suits phone photos of people. Landscape 4:3 suits scenery and group shots.

Collage size: the formula and two examples

The tool works out each tile from the width you type:

  • Tile width = (collage width − spacing × (columns + 1)) ÷ columns
  • Tile height = tile width ÷ tile shape (1 for square, 4 ÷ 3 for landscape, 3 ÷ 4 for portrait, 16 ÷ 9 for wide)
  • Collage height = rows × tile height + spacing × (rows + 1)

Spacing is added around the outside edge too, so the photos get an even frame.

Example 1: six Diwali photos, default settings. Auto picks 3 columns and 2 rows. Tile width = (1800 − 12 × 4) ÷ 3 = 584 px. Square tiles are 584 px tall. Collage height = 2 × 584 + 12 × 3 = 1204 px. You get a 1800 × 1204 JPG.

Example 2: four phone portraits for a family group. Columns 2, Portrait 3:4, width 1080, spacing 12. Tile width = (1080 − 12 × 3) ÷ 2 = 522 px. Tile height = 522 ÷ 0.75 = 696 px. Collage height = 2 × 696 + 12 × 3 = 1428 px. You get a 1080 × 1428 image.

Which format and width to choose

Where it’s going Width Format
WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook 1080 to 1800 px JPG at 85% to 90%
Website or blog 1200 to 1600 px WebP
Printing at a photo shop 3000 px or more JPG at 95% to 100%
Slides or a school project 1600 to 1920 px JPG or PNG

A wider collage is sharper but heavier. If the file is too big to send, run it through the image compressor, or shrink it with the image resizer.

Good uses for a simple grid

  • Before and after: two photos, 2 columns, same tile shape. Works for room makeovers, haircuts, cleaning jobs and product repairs.
  • Event highlights: a wedding, birthday or festival in one image that fits a family WhatsApp group.
  • Product listings: show a product from several angles in one picture on a white background.
  • College projects: group field-trip or lab photos into one figure for a report or presentation.

Limitations

  • Grids only: every tile is the same size and shape. There are no templates, mixed sizes or shaped layouts.
  • No reordering or panning: you can’t drag photos to new cells or choose which part of a photo shows. Crop a photo first with Crop Image if the centre is not the part you want.
  • No text or stickers: add a caption afterwards in another editor if you need one.
  • Six columns at most. Bigger grids need more rows.
  • Every photo must open: if one file can’t be read, such as an iPhone HEIC photo outside Safari, the collage won’t build. Convert it with HEIC to JPG first.
  • Very wide collages with many photos can be slow or fail on older phones, because all the work happens on your device. If that happens, lower the width.

FAQ

Collage Maker FAQs

How do I make a photo collage for free?

Select two or more photos in the tool above, choose the columns, tile shape, spacing and background colour, and click Download. It is free with no sign-up and no watermark. The collage is built in your browser, so the photos stay on your phone or computer. The default output is an 1800 px wide JPG.

How many photos can I put in one collage?

There is no fixed limit, but the grid has at most six columns, so more photos add more rows. Two to twelve photos look best at normal sizes, because each tile stays large enough to see faces. With many photos, raise the collage width so the tiles don’t get too small, and keep an eye on your phone’s memory.

Does the collage maker add a watermark?

No. The downloaded image contains only your photos, the spacing and the background colour you chose. There is no logo, text or watermark, and you don’t need an account. You can use the collage anywhere, from a WhatsApp group to a printed album, as long as you have the right to use the photos.

Why are my photos cut off in the collage?

Each photo is cropped from its centre to fill its tile without stretching. If the photo’s shape doesn’t match the tile shape, the edges are trimmed. A tall phone photo in a Square or Wide tile loses its top and bottom. Choose Portrait 3:4 for phone portraits, or crop each photo first so the important part sits in the middle.

How do I change the order of photos?

The tool places photos in the order your device passes them in, filling left to right and then top to bottom. There is no drag-to-reorder yet. The simplest fix is to rename your files 01, 02, 03 and so on, since file pickers usually list them by name, then select them again.

What size should a collage be for Instagram or WhatsApp?

A width of 1080 to 1800 px is plenty for phone screens. Pick Square tiles for a square-looking grid, then check the height shown under the result. For a portrait post, use Portrait 3:4 tiles with 2 columns. Save as JPG at 85% to 90% so the file stays light enough to send quickly on mobile data.

Can I make a collage with a transparent background?

No. The background colour is always painted solid behind the photos, even in PNG and WebP. You can pick any colour for the gaps, such as black or your brand colour. If you don’t want any background to show at all, set Spacing to 0 and choose a column count that fills every cell.

Are my photos uploaded to make the collage?

No. The photos are read, cropped and joined inside your browser using your own device. Nothing is sent to a server or stored by us. Closing or refreshing the tab clears them from the page. This also means very large batches depend on your device’s memory, so older phones may be slower.
