Rotate Image
Turn a photo 90° either way, 180°, or any custom angle, for one image or a whole batch, without uploading it.
How to rotate an image
- Drop one or more images into the box above, or click browse.
- Pick an angle under Rotate: 90° clockwise (the default), 180°, 90° counter-clockwise or Custom angle.
- For Custom angle, drag the Angle slider. Positive numbers turn clockwise, negative numbers turn counter-clockwise, in 1° steps.
- Leave Format on Same as original, or choose JPG, PNG or WebP. For JPG and WebP, set the Quality (10% to 100%, default 90%).
- The rotated image appears with its new size in pixels. Click Download, or Download all (ZIP) for a batch. File names end in “-rotated”.
What happens to the size and corners
A 90° or 270° turn swaps width and height: a 4000 × 3000 landscape photo becomes 3000 × 4000 portrait. A 180° turn keeps the size. No pixels are lost in any of these three.
Any other angle needs a bigger canvas, because a tilted rectangle sticks out past the old edges. The tool makes the canvas just large enough to hold the whole picture, so nothing gets cut off. The new size is:
New width = W × |cos θ| + H × |sin θ|
New height = W × |sin θ| + H × |cos θ|
The four triangles in the corners have no photo in them. They come out white in a JPG and transparent in a PNG or WebP.
| Rotation | 4000 × 3000 photo becomes | Empty corners? |
|---|---|---|
| 90° clockwise | 3000 × 4000 | No |
| 180° | 4000 × 3000 | No |
| 90° counter-clockwise | 3000 × 4000 | No |
| Custom 15° | 4640 × 3933 | Yes |
| Custom 45° | 4950 × 4950 | Yes |
Worked example: straightening a tilted scan
Anjali photographs her Class 12 marksheet on a table. The 3000 × 4000 photo is tilted about 3° counter-clockwise, so the lines slope up to the left. She picks Custom angle and drags the slider to 3 (a clockwise turn) until the printed lines look level.
- cos 3° = 0.99863 and sin 3° = 0.05234.
- New width: 3000 × 0.99863 + 4000 × 0.05234 = 3205 px.
- New height: 3000 × 0.05234 + 4000 × 0.99863 = 4152 px.
The result is 3205 × 4152 with thin white wedges along the edges. She opens it in Crop Image and trims just inside the wedges. If the portal sets a size limit in KB, the image compressor or image resizer is the next step.
Why phone photos show up sideways
Phones often store a photo in the sensor’s landscape shape and add a small tag saying “show this turned”. Your gallery reads the tag, but some upload forms, older apps and printers ignore it, so the photo looks sideways there even though it looked fine on your phone.
This tool works on the photo as your browser shows it, then saves a fresh copy with no tag at all. Pick the rotation that makes the result upright and download it. The saved file looks the same on every site, because there is no tag left to misread.
Rotate or flip?
Rotate when the picture is turned the wrong way, such as a sideways photo or a tilted scan. Flip when it is mirrored, such as a selfie where text reads backwards. Rotating 180° gives the same result as flipping both ways in the flip image tool.
Limitations
- No auto-straighten: the tool does not detect a tilted horizon. Judge the angle by eye with the slider.
- No crop to fill: custom angles keep the whole picture and leave empty corners. Crop them away afterwards.
- One angle per batch: every image in a batch turns by the same amount.
- Whole degrees only: the slider moves in 1° steps, from -180° to 180°.
- Formats: with Same as original, GIF, BMP and other formats are saved as PNG, and animated GIFs keep one frame. Convert iPhone HEIC photos with HEIC to JPG first if your browser is not Safari.
- Quality on JPG: the image is compressed again when saved. Use PNG output for a lossless copy.
FAQ
Rotate Image FAQs
How do I rotate an image 90 degrees?
Drop the image into the tool above. 90° clockwise is selected by default, so the rotated copy appears straight away. For the other direction, choose 90° counter-clockwise. The width and height swap, so a landscape photo becomes portrait. Click Download to save it, or Download all (ZIP) if you added several images.
Can I rotate an image by a custom angle?
Yes. Choose Custom angle and drag the slider anywhere from -180° to 180° in 1° steps. Positive values turn the picture clockwise and negative values turn it counter-clockwise. The canvas grows to fit the tilted picture, so the corners are filled with white in a JPG or left transparent in a PNG or WebP.
Why are there white corners after rotating?
A picture turned by an angle that is not a multiple of 90° no longer fits a straight rectangle, so the tool makes a larger canvas and the corners have no photo in them. JPG cannot store transparency, so they are white. Save as PNG or WebP to keep them transparent, or crop them away with the crop tool.
Why does my photo look sideways after uploading?
Many phones save photos with an orientation tag instead of turning the pixels. Your gallery reads the tag, but some websites and forms ignore it. Rotate the photo here until the preview looks right and download it. The saved copy has the pixels turned and no tag, so it appears the same way everywhere.
Does rotating reduce image quality?
Turns of 90°, 180° and 270° move pixels without changing them, and PNG output keeps them exact. Custom angles have to blend neighbouring pixels slightly, which softens fine detail a little. Saving as JPG or WebP also compresses the image again, at 90% quality by default, which is hard to spot but changes the file size.
Can I rotate multiple images at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many images as you need. They all turn by the same angle and are saved in the same format and quality. Each one gets its own Download button, and Download all (ZIP) saves the whole set in one file. Run a second batch for images that need a different angle.
Which way is clockwise in the custom slider?
Positive angles turn the picture clockwise, the way a clock’s hands move. Negative angles turn it counter-clockwise. So 15 tilts the top of the picture to the right and -15 tilts it to the left. The preset 90° clockwise equals a custom 90, and 90° counter-clockwise equals a custom -90.
Is it safe to rotate ID cards and documents here?
Yes, because the image never leaves your device. The rotation runs inside your browser, and nothing is sent to or stored on a server. Closing or refreshing the tab clears the image from the page. Keep the original file until you have checked that the rotated copy looks right.
