Meme Generator
Turn any photo into a classic meme with bold outlined top and bottom text, no watermark and no sign-up.
How to make a meme
- Drop a photo or screenshot into the box above, or click browse.
- Type your Top text and Bottom text. Leave either one blank if you only need one line. The meme redraws a moment after you stop typing.
- Move the Text size slider. It runs from 4% to 20% of the image width and starts at 10%.
- Pick a Text colour. White is the default, and the black outline stays the same whatever colour you pick.
- Untick UPPERCASE if you want the text exactly as typed.
- Choose the Format (JPG by default) and the quality, then click Download. The file name ends in “-meme”.
How the text is drawn
The tool uses the classic meme look: Impact, a tall, heavy font, in white with a thick black outline. The outline keeps the words readable on both light and dark parts of the photo.
- Size follows the image width. At 10% on a 1080 px wide photo, the font size is 108 px. The same 10% on a 600 px photo gives 60 px, so the meme looks the same whatever the photo size.
- Outline is one-seventh of the letter size, so it grows with the text.
- Long captions wrap onto new lines. Each line can use up to 92% of the image width, and lines are spaced at 1.1 times the letter size.
- Top text starts just below the top edge and grows downwards. Bottom text sits just above the bottom edge and grows upwards.
Impact comes with Windows and macOS. Android phones usually don’t have it, so there the tool uses Arial Black or the phone’s heaviest sans-serif font, and the letters look a little wider.
Worked example
Sneha has a 1080 × 1080 photo of her cat glaring at a laptop. Top text: “When the Wi-Fi drops”. Bottom text: “during the online exam”. She keeps the defaults.
- Font size: 10% of 1080 = 108 px.
- Outline: 108 ÷ 7 = about 15 px of black around each letter.
- Gap from the edge: about 38 px.
- Each line can be up to 994 px wide. “WHEN THE WI-FI DROPS” fits on one line or wraps to two, depending on the font your device has.
- She downloads a 1080 × 1080 JPG at 90% quality, ready for Instagram or a WhatsApp group.
If the captions cover the cat’s face, she drops Text size to 8%. If the photo is busy and the text gets lost, she raises it to 12% instead.
Tips for memes that land
- Keep it short. Two short lines beat one long paragraph. If your caption wraps to three lines at the top, cut words.
- Leave room in the photo. Photos with sky, a wall or empty floor at the top and bottom work best, because the text doesn’t hide the subject.
- Crop first. Use Crop Image to zoom in on the face or reaction that makes the joke.
- Square for feeds, tall for status. A square image suits Instagram and Facebook posts. For a WhatsApp or Instagram status, start with a tall phone screenshot.
- Use your own photos or images you have the right to share, especially if the meme is for a brand or college page.
Which format to download
| Format | When to use it |
|---|---|
| JPG (default) | Photos for WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and X. Small and opens everywhere. |
| PNG | Screenshots, cartoons and memes with lots of text, where you want the sharpest letters. |
| WebP | Memes for a website or blog, where small file size matters. |
| Same as original | Keeps your photo’s format. GIF and other formats are saved as PNG. |
If the meme is too large to send, the image compressor can shrink it further.
Limitations
- Bring your own image: there is no built-in library of meme templates. Use a photo or screenshot you already have.
- Two text boxes: top and bottom only. You can’t drag text to other spots or add a third caption.
- One font and a black outline: you can change the text colour, but not the font or the outline colour.
- Still images only: an animated GIF keeps one frame, and video memes are not supported.
- No caption bar: the text goes on the photo itself. For the white bar above the photo used in newer memes, add space first in another editor.
- HEIC photos: convert iPhone photos with HEIC to JPG first if you’re not on Safari.
FAQ
Meme Generator FAQs
How do I make a meme from my own photo?
Drop your photo into the tool above, type the top and bottom text, and click Download. The text appears in bold white capitals with a black outline, the classic meme style. You can change the text size, colour and capitals setting before saving. It is free with no sign-up, and the photo never leaves your device.
What font do memes use?
Classic memes use Impact, a tall, heavy font, in white with a black outline. This tool uses Impact when your device has it, which Windows and macOS do. Android phones usually don’t, so the tool falls back to Arial Black or the heaviest sans-serif font available, which looks a little wider but still bold.
Does this meme generator add a watermark?
No. The downloaded meme contains only your photo and your text, with no logo or website name. You don’t need an account either. Some popular meme sites add a small watermark on free plans, so this is handy when you want a clean image for a page, group or presentation.
How do I make the meme text smaller or bigger?
Move the Text size slider, which runs from 4% to 20% of the image width. The default is 10%, so a 1080 px wide photo gets a 108 px font. Use a smaller size for long captions so they wrap onto fewer lines, and a bigger one for a single punchy word. The outline thickness changes with the size.
Can I change the text colour?
Yes. Click Text colour and pick any colour. White is the default because it stands out best with the black outline. Yellow also reads well on most photos. The outline always stays black, so very dark text colours can look muddy. Check the preview before you download.
Can I use only top text or only bottom text?
Yes. Leave either box empty and only the other caption appears. Many reaction memes use just bottom text. The text is always centred, with top text growing down from the top edge and bottom text growing up from the bottom edge, so a single caption never overlaps the other position.
Can I make a GIF or video meme?
No. This tool makes still images only. If you upload an animated GIF, only one frame is used and the meme is saved as a still image. For animated memes you need a GIF or video editor. You can still make a still meme from a screenshot of the moment you want.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The text is drawn onto your photo inside your browser, on your own phone or computer. Nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is stored after you close the tab. That makes it safe to use with personal photos and screenshots of private chats, though check what’s visible before you share the meme.
