Flip Image

Mirror a photo left to right or flip it upside down, one image or a whole batch, without uploading anything.

Flip Image Files never leave your device

What each flip does

A flip swaps pixels across a line through the middle of the picture. Nothing is stretched or cropped, so the width and height stay exactly the same.

Option What happens Text in the photo
Horizontal (mirror) Left and right swap, like looking in a mirror Reads backwards
Vertical (upside down) Top and bottom swap, like a reflection in water Upside down and backwards
Both Flips both ways at once Upside down but readable

“Both” gives the same picture as turning it 180°. If you only want to turn a photo, not mirror it, the rotate image tool is the clearer choice.

How to flip an image

  1. Drop one or more images into the box above, or click browse. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and most other formats your browser can open will work.
  2. Choose the direction under Flip. Horizontal is selected by default, so a mirrored copy appears straight away.
  3. Leave Format on Same as original, or pick JPG, PNG or WebP.
  4. For JPG and WebP, set the Quality. It runs from 10% to 100% and starts at 90%.
  5. Click Download. The file name ends in “-flipped”. With several images, use Download all (ZIP).

Will flipping reduce quality?

The flip itself loses nothing, because each pixel just moves to its mirror position. What can change the quality is the save step.

  • PNG output: pixel for pixel identical to a mirrored original. Use this when quality matters most.
  • JPG or WebP output: the picture is compressed again at the quality you set. At the default 90% the difference is hard to see, but the file size will not match the original exactly.

Flipping the same JPG many times over, saving each time, slowly adds blur and blocky edges. If you are unsure about the direction, go back to the original file instead of flipping the flipped copy.

When people flip a photo

  • Selfies with backwards text: some front cameras save a mirrored shot, so a T-shirt logo or a shop sign reads the wrong way. A horizontal flip fixes it.
  • Layouts and thumbnails: a person or product facing off the edge of a banner looks odd. Mirror it so it faces into the page. Avoid this if the picture has text, a logo or a watch on one wrist.
  • Iron-on transfers and T-shirt prints: transfer paper prints the design reversed onto the fabric, so you print a mirrored copy. Check your transfer paper’s instructions, because some types don’t need it.
  • Reflection effects: a vertical flip placed under the original makes a simple water or glass reflection for a poster.
  • Scans that came out the wrong way: a document photographed through glass or captured by a mirrored webcam can be put right in one step.

Worked example

Ravi takes a 3000 × 4000 selfie in front of his college gate and the name board reads backwards. He drops the JPG in, keeps Horizontal and Same as original, and gets a 3000 × 4000 JPG with the board readable, saved at 90% quality. He then wants a lighter file to post in his class WhatsApp group, so he runs the flipped copy through the image compressor with a max width of 1080.

Limitations

  • One direction per batch: every image in a batch gets the same flip. Run a second batch for images that need a different one.
  • Odd formats become PNG: with Same as original, GIF, BMP, AVIF and similar files are saved as PNG. Animated GIFs keep only one frame.
  • iPhone HEIC photos: Safari can open them, but Chrome and most other browsers can’t. Convert them with HEIC to JPG first.
  • Camera details removed: the saved copy has no date, phone model or GPS data from the original.
  • No partial flips: the whole image is flipped. To flip only part of a photo, crop that part out first.

FAQ

Flip Image FAQs

How do I flip an image horizontally?

Drop the image into the tool above and leave Flip on Horizontal (mirror), which is the default. A mirrored copy appears at once with the same width and height. Click Download to save it. You can do the same with many images at once and save them all as one ZIP file.

What is the difference between flipping and rotating?

Flipping makes a mirror image, so text reads backwards. Rotating turns the picture around its centre, so text stays readable but tilts or turns upside down. Flipping both horizontally and vertically gives the same result as rotating 180°. Use flip to fix a mirrored selfie and rotate to fix a sideways phone photo.

Does flipping an image reduce its quality?

The flip itself doesn’t, because pixels only change places. Quality can change when the file is saved again. Choose PNG under Format for an exact copy. JPG and WebP are compressed again at the quality you set, 90% by default, which is close to the original but not identical in file size.

How do I fix a mirrored selfie?

Upload the selfie and choose Horizontal (mirror). Any text, logo or name board in the photo will read the right way again. Keep Format on Same as original so the photo stays a JPG. If the selfie is from an iPhone and saved as HEIC, convert it to JPG first, since most browsers other than Safari can’t open HEIC.

Can I flip many images at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many images as you like, and all of them are flipped in the same direction with the same format and quality. Each result has its own Download button, and Download all (ZIP) saves the whole batch as one file. Large batches take longer on older phones because the work happens on your device.

Are my photos uploaded when I flip them?

No. The flip happens inside your browser on your own phone or computer, and the image is never sent to a server. That makes it fine to use for ID scans and family photos. Closing or refreshing the tab clears the images from the page.

Can I flip a GIF or PNG with a transparent background?

Yes for PNG. Keep Format on Same as original or pick PNG or WebP, and transparent areas stay transparent. If you choose JPG, transparent areas become white. GIFs can be flipped, but they are saved as PNG with Same as original, and an animated GIF keeps only one frame.

How do I flip a photo upside down?

Choose Vertical (upside down) under Flip. Top and bottom swap, so the picture looks like a reflection in water and any text reads upside down and backwards. If you want the photo upside down with readable text, choose Both instead, or use the rotate tool and pick 180°.
