Kundli Matching by Name Nothing is stored or sent

Based on traditional Vedic astrology rules, for guidance only. A name gives a rough birth star; a full kundli match needs date, time and place of birth.

How naam se gun milan works

Vedic astrology splits the zodiac into 27 nakshatras (birth stars). Each nakshatra has four quarters called padas, so there are 108 padas in all. Every pada has its own starting syllable, listed in a chart called the Avakahada chakra. By custom, a baby’s name starts with the syllable of the pada the Moon was in at birth.

Gun milan by name runs this the other way round:

  1. The calculator reads the first sound of each name, such as Ra in Rahul or Pi in Priya.
  2. It finds that syllable in the chakra, which gives the nakshatra and pada.
  3. Every nine padas make one rashi (Moon sign), so the pada also gives the rashi.
  4. It compares the two stars and signs on the eight kootas and adds up the points.

If you know your real birth nakshatra, pick it from the optional list under your name. The calculator then uses it instead of the name, which gets you much closer to a proper kundli match.

What your gun milan score means

Most astrologers treat 18 out of 36 as the minimum for an acceptable match. The calculator labels the score with these traditional bands:

Gunas matched Label shown How tradition reads it
Below 18 Not recommended Weak on paper. Worth a full birth-chart check before reading anything into it.
18 to 24.5 Average match Acceptable for a match by tradition.
25 to 32.5 Very good match Strong agreement on most kootas.
33 to 36 Excellent match Rare. Almost every koota agrees.

The total is only part of it. Astrologers look hardest at Nadi and Bhakoot, the two heaviest kootas, because a zero in either is called a dosha. A name-based score is also only as good as the nakshatra the name points to, so a low number here is a reason to look closer, not a verdict.

How each koota is scored

Ashtakoota means “eight factors”. Here is exactly how this calculator scores each one, so you can check the result by hand.

Koota Max What it compares Scoring rule used
Varna 1 Varna of each rashi: water signs Brahmin, fire Kshatriya, earth Vaishya, air Shudra 1 if the boy’s varna is equal to or higher than the girl’s, else 0
Vashya 2 Group of each rashi: human, four-legged, water, wild or insect Standard 5 × 5 table, read from the girl’s group to the boy’s: 0, 0.5, 1 or 2
Tara 3 Count of nakshatras from one person to the other, both ways Count ÷ 9: a remainder of 3, 5 or 7 is unlucky. 1.5 points for each direction that is not
Yoni 4 Animal symbol of each nakshatra (14 animals) 4 for the same animal, 0 for the seven sworn-enemy pairs (such as cat and rat), 1 to 3 otherwise
Graha Maitri 5 Whether the planets ruling the two rashis are friends 5 same lord or mutual friends, 4 friend and neutral, 3 both neutral, 1 friend and enemy, 0.5 neutral and enemy, 0 mutual enemies
Gana 6 Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa nature of each nakshatra See the Gana table below
Bhakoot 7 How many signs apart the two rashis are 0 if they are 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 apart (Bhakoot dosha), else 7
Nadi 8 Aadi, Madhya or Antya nadi of each nakshatra 0 if both share a nadi (Nadi dosha), else 8

Three kootas are one-way. For Varna, Vashya and Gana the points change if you swap the names, so type the boy’s name in the boy’s box.

Gana points (girl’s gana in rows, boy’s gana in columns)

Girl Boy Deva Manushya Rakshasa
Deva 6 6 0
Manushya 5 6 0
Rakshasa 1 0 6

The Gana and Vashya tables follow the ones published by OnlineJyotish (opens in new tab). The 1 to 3 point Yoni cells differ slightly between commentaries, so another site can be half a point or a point away from ours on Yoni alone.

Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha

  • Nadi dosha means both people share the same nadi, so Nadi scores 0 out of 8. Tradition links it to health and children, and it is the dosha families ask about most.
  • Bhakoot dosha means the two rashis sit 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 places apart, so Bhakoot scores 0 out of 7. Tradition links it to family harmony and money.

Neither is a final word. Astrologers recognise exceptions (parihara) that can cancel a dosha. A commonly cited one is when both people share the same rashi but were born in different nakshatras. Those checks need the full birth chart, so this calculator flags the dosha and leaves the exceptions to an astrologer. A dosha found from a name is also only as reliable as the name’s link to your real birth star.

Worked example: Rahul and Priya

Rahul starts with Ra (रा): Chitra nakshatra, pada 3, Tula rashi. Priya starts with Pi (पी): Uttara Phalguni, pada 4, Kanya rashi.

Koota Rahul Priya Points
Varna Shudra Vaishya 0 / 1
Vashya Manava Manava 2 / 2
Tara Chitra Uttara Phalguni 1.5 / 3
Yoni Tiger Cow 0 / 4
Graha Maitri Venus Mercury 5 / 5
Gana Rakshasa Manushya 0 / 6
Bhakoot Tula Kanya 0 / 7
Nadi Madhya Aadi 8 / 8
Total 16.5 / 36

Kanya and Tula are neighbours (2 and 12 places apart), which gives Bhakoot dosha. Tiger and cow are sworn enemies in Yoni, and a Rakshasa boy with a Manushya girl scores 0 on Gana. Their nadis differ, so there is no Nadi dosha. On names alone that is 16.5. If either of them has a separate janma naam, or knows their birth nakshatra, the result can change completely.

Why two names with the same first sound score 28

Aarav and Ananya both start with A, which is Krittika pada 1 in Mesha. Same pada means same varna, group, animal, lord and gana, so seven kootas score in full. But they also share a nadi, so Nadi gives 0. Any two names with the same starting sound land on 28 out of 36 with Nadi dosha. Karan and Kavya (both Ka) get exactly the same result.

This matters because a lot of Indian names start with A, and every one of them, from Amit to Aditi, lands on that same pada. Two real people with these names are very unlikely to share a birth star. It is the clearest sign of why name matching is a rough guide.

How the calculator reads names

English spelling cannot always show which Hindi sound you mean. The calculator follows the sounds most Indian names use:

  • T, D, N and Th are read as the soft त, द, न and थ, so Tanvi is Tula rashi and Deepak is Meena rashi. If the hard ट, ड, ण or ठ would give a different rashi, the result tells you.
  • Sh is read as ष, the only “sha” in the chakra, which falls in Kanya rashi.
  • B is read as व, W as V, F as Ph, Z as J, and C, Q, X as K.
  • Joined consonants are read up to the first vowel: Priya is “Pi”, Krishna is “Ki”, Shreya is “Sha”.
  • Hindi script is read exactly, so टीना and तीना give different stars. Typing in Hindi removes the guesswork.

Name matching vs full kundli matching

Matching by name Matching by birth details
You need Two names Date, time and place of birth for both
Nakshatra comes from The first sound of the name The Moon’s actual position at birth
Manglik dosha check Not possible Yes, from where Mars sits in the chart
Dosha exceptions Not applied Checked by the astrologer
Best for A quick first look, or when birth time is unknown Any real decision about marriage

A name points to your birth star only if it was chosen from your nakshatra syllable at the naamkaran. Many modern names are not. If your family gave you a separate janma naam (rashi name), use that here instead of your everyday name.

Got a low score? Do this first

  1. Check whether either person has a janma naam, and try that.
  2. If you know either birth nakshatra, pick it from the list. One correct star changes several kootas at once.
  3. For a name starting with T, D, N or Th, read the hard-sound note under the result, or type the name in Hindi.
  4. For anything that matters, get a full match from birth details. A gun milan score is one traditional input; families also weigh education, values and how the two people actually get on.

FAQ

Kundli Matching by Name FAQs

Can kundli be matched by name only?

Yes, kundli can be matched by name when birth details are not known. The first syllable of each name gives a nakshatra and rashi, and the eight kootas are scored as usual. It is less exact than matching by birth details, because a name reflects your real birth star only if it was chosen from your nakshatra syllable.

Shaadi ke liye kitne gun milne chahiye?

Traditionally, at least 18 of the 36 gunas should match for marriage. 18 to 24 is read as average, 25 to 32 as very good, and 33 or more as excellent. Astrologers also check Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, which can count for more than the total. A score from names alone should be confirmed with birth details.

Which name should I use for gun milan by name?

Use your janma naam (rashi name) if your family chose one from your birth star, because it points to your real nakshatra. Otherwise use the first name you are called by, as it is spoken. Only the first sound counts, so surnames, middle names and spelling after the first syllable make no difference.

What is Nadi dosha?

Nadi dosha means the boy and girl share the same nadi: Aadi, Madhya or Antya. Nadi koota then scores 0 out of 8. Tradition links it to health and children, and it is the dosha families ask about most. Astrologers recognise exceptions that can cancel it, and check them in the full birth chart.

What is Bhakoot dosha?

Bhakoot dosha means the two Moon signs are 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 places apart. Bhakoot koota then scores 0 out of 7. Tradition links it to family harmony and finances. Like Nadi dosha, it has recognised exceptions, which an astrologer checks in the full chart.

Can this calculator check Manglik dosha?

No. Manglik dosha depends on which house Mars occupies in the birth chart, and that needs the exact date, time and place of birth. A name cannot show where Mars was. Use a full kundli match from birth details for a Manglik check, and treat any name-based tool that claims one with caution.

Why do two names with the same first letter score 28?

Two names with the same starting sound land on the same nakshatra pada. Seven kootas then match fully and give 28 points, but the shared nadi gives Nadi dosha and 0 on Nadi. This happens a lot with names starting with A. It shows the limit of name matching rather than anything about the couple.

Why does my name show the wrong nakshatra?

Your name may not have been chosen from your birth star, or its English spelling may be read as a different sound. T, for example, could be ट or त. Type the name in Hindi for an exact reading, or pick your nakshatra from the list under your name and the calculator will use that instead.
