Rashi by Name Nothing is stored or sent

Based on traditional Vedic astrology rules, for guidance only. A name gives a rough birth star; your true rashi and nakshatra come from the Moon’s position at birth.

How to find your rashi by name

  1. Type your name in English (Rahul) or Hindi (राहुल). Only the first name matters.
  2. The tool reads the first sound: Ra in Rahul, Pi in Priya.
  3. It finds that sound in the Avakahada chakra, a traditional chart that gives a starting syllable to each of the 108 quarters (padas) of the 27 nakshatras.
  4. Every nine padas make one rashi, so the syllable gives your rashi and nakshatra together.

Example: Rahul starts with Ra (रा), which is Chitra nakshatra, pada 3. That pada falls in Tula (Libra) rashi, ruled by Venus, in the Air element. The result also lists the nine syllables of your rashi, so you can check it yourself.

Soft and hard sounds: T, D, N and Th

English letters cannot tell some Hindi sounds apart, and the two readings often fall in different rashis:

English Soft sound (most names) Hard sound
T (Tanvi, Tina) त: Tula or Vrischika ट: Simha or Kanya
D (Deepak, Disha) द: Kumbha or Meena ड: Karka
N (Neha, Nikhil) न: Vrischika ण: Kanya
Th (Tharun) थ: Meena ठ: Kanya

The tool reads the soft sound, which most Indian names use, and adds a note with the other rashi when it differs. Tina, for example, reads as Tula, with a note that the hard टी would make it Simha. Typing the name in Hindi removes the doubt, because Hindi script shows exactly which sound it is.

Other spelling rules the tool uses

  • Joined consonants are read up to the first vowel. Priya is “Pi”, Krishna is “Ki”, and in Hindi प्रिया is read as पि.
  • Long and short vowels count the same: Aa and A, Ee and I, Oo and U. Ai reads as E and Au as O, so Kailash is “Ke” and Gaurav is “Go”.
  • Sh is read as ष, the only “sha” in the chakra, which is Kanya rashi.
  • B is read as व, W as V, F as Ph and Z as J. Most rashi letter lists do the same.
  • Names starting with a vowel: A is Mesha; I, U, E and O are Vrishabha.

Name rashi vs birth rashi

Your true rashi (janma rashi) is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. It comes from your date, time and place of birth, not from your name. The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days, so even the date alone can leave two possible rashis.

A name points to the same rashi only if it was chosen from your birth syllable, which is a common Hindu naming custom at the naamkaran. Many people also have a separate rashi name (janma naam) used for rituals.

  • Know your birth details? Your kundli gives the exact rashi.
  • Name chosen by a pandit at your naamkaran? Your name rashi is likely the same as your birth rashi.
  • Name chosen for other reasons? Treat the name rashi as a traditional guide only.

Rashi is also not your Western sun sign. Western astrology uses the Sun on a moving (tropical) zodiac; Vedic rashi uses the Moon on a fixed (sidereal) zodiac. That is why your rashi and the “star sign” in a magazine column often differ.

What the rest of the result means

  • Rashi lord: the planet that rules your Moon sign. Kundli matching compares the two lords in the Graha Maitri koota.
  • Element: Fire, Earth, Air or Water. The 12 rashis cycle through the four elements in that order, starting with Mesha.
  • Nakshatra: your birth star and pada. See nakshatra by name for its lord, gana, yoni and nadi.

Want to compare two people? Kundli matching by name uses these same rashis and nakshatras for a 36-point gun milan. For a different system altogether, try the numerology calculator.

FAQ

Rashi by Name FAQs

How can I find my rashi by name?

Take the first sound of your name and find it in the rashi name letters chart. Names starting with Ra, Ri, Ru, Re or Ro, for example, are Tula rashi. This tool does it for you: type your name in English or Hindi to see your rashi, nakshatra, rashi lord, element and the nine syllables of that rashi.

Is rashi by name the same as rashi by date of birth?

Not always. Your birth rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, worked out from date, time and place of birth. A name gives the same rashi only if it was chosen from your birth syllable, as many families do at the naming ceremony. If you know your birth details, your kundli gives the exact rashi.

Which rashi is for names starting with A?

Names starting with A (अ), such as Aarav, Amit or Ananya, are Mesha (Aries) rashi, in Krittika nakshatra pada 1. Names starting with I, U or E (इ, उ, ए) are Vrishabha (Taurus), in Krittika padas 2 to 4. Names starting with O (ओ) are also Vrishabha, in Rohini nakshatra pada 1.

Which rashi is for names starting with S or Sh?

Names starting with Sa, Si, Su, Se or So (स) are Kumbha (Aquarius), in Shatabhisha or Purva Bhadrapada nakshatra. Names starting with Sh, such as Shreya or Shivam, are traditionally read as ष, which is Kanya (Virgo) rashi, in Hasta nakshatra pada 2. Some families read श names differently, so check with yours.

Can I type my name in Hindi?

Yes, and Hindi gives the most exact result, because Hindi script shows the precise sound. टीना and तीना are both spelled Tina in English but fall in different rashis: Simha and Tula. The tool reads conjuncts too, so प्रिया is read from पि and श्रेया from शे.

Should I use my first name or full name?

Use your first name, the one you are called by. Rashi by name only reads the first sound, so surnames and middle names make no difference. If your family gave you a separate rashi name (janma naam) at birth, use that instead, because it was chosen from your actual birth star.

Can I read my rashifal by name rashi?

Yes, many people read the daily rashifal by their name rashi when they do not know their birth rashi. Astrologers prefer the birth rashi for predictions, because it comes from the Moon’s real position. If your name was chosen from your birth syllable, both are usually the same and the question does not arise.

Is my name saved anywhere?

No. The rashi by name tool runs entirely in your browser, so the name you type never reaches our servers and nothing is stored. There is no sign-up and no account. Refreshing or closing the page clears it, so you can look up as many names as you like privately.
