JPG to PNG
Convert JPG and JPEG photos to lossless PNG in your browser, one file or many at once.
What JPG to PNG conversion does
The tool decodes your JPG, draws it on a canvas at its original size and saves that canvas as a PNG. PNG uses lossless compression, so from this point on the picture never loses more detail, however many times you open and save it. (W3C (opens in new tab))
What it cannot do is undo the JPG. JPEG is a lossy format, so some detail was thrown away when the JPG was first saved. (MDN (opens in new tab)) The PNG copies the JPG as it is today, including any blocky patches or halos around text. It will look the same, not better.
How to use the JPG to PNG converter
- Drop one or more JPG or JPEG files into the box above, or click browse.
- There are no settings to choose. PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider.
- Each PNG appears with its size in pixels and KB a moment later.
- Click Download. With two or more files, Download all (ZIP) saves them together.
Real result from our test
We converted a 1920 × 1920 px JPG (a photo-style landscape wallpaper saved at 90% quality) on 19 October 2026 in a Chromium browser.
| File | Dimensions | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Original JPG | 1920 × 1920 px | 300.6 KB |
| PNG from this tool | 1920 × 1920 px | 2.71 MB |
The PNG is about nine times bigger and looks identical. That is normal for photos. Lossless compression has to store the grain, noise and fine colour changes that JPG was allowed to smooth over. Screenshots and graphics with flat colours grow much less.
When converting JPG to PNG makes sense
- You will edit the image several times. Each JPG re-save loses a little more detail. Convert once to PNG, edit and save as often as you like, and export to JPG only at the end.
- An app or portal asks for PNG. Some design tools, sticker makers and upload forms accept PNG only.
- You are adding text, arrows or a screenshot overlay. Sharp edges and small text stay crisp in PNG, while JPG tends to blur them.
- You plan to remove the background later. PNG can store transparency, so it is the right container once you cut the subject out in an editor.
When you should not convert
If the JPG is a photo going on a website, in an email or on WhatsApp, leave it as JPG. You will get a file many times larger with no visible gain. If the goal is a smaller file, use the image compressor instead, and for a modern format with both small size and transparency, convert to WebP with the image converter.
JPG vs PNG at a glance
| Feature | JPG / JPEG | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy | Lossless |
| Transparency | No | Yes, full alpha channel |
| Best for | Photos | Screenshots, logos, diagrams, images you will edit again |
| Repeated saving | Loses detail each time | No loss |
| Size for the same photo (our test) | 300.6 KB | 2.71 MB |
Does JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
No. A JPG has no transparent pixels to carry over, because JPEG does not support an alpha channel. (MDN (opens in new tab)) A white background in your JPG stays solid white in the PNG.
Many online converters skip this point, and people only find out when the logo shows a white box on a coloured page. To get a see-through background you need a background removal step in an editor after converting.
Limitations
- No transparency is added: the PNG keeps the JPG’s solid background.
- No resizing: the PNG has the same pixel size as the JPG. Use the image resizer if you need a different size.
- Camera details are dropped: EXIF data such as the phone model, date and GPS location is not copied into the PNG. That is good for privacy but bad if you need it.
- Large files: big photos make very big PNGs. Check any upload limit before converting.
Key facts
- PNG compression permits reconstruction of the original data exactly, bit for bit. (W3C PNG Third Edition, 2025 (opens in new tab))
- JPEG is the most widely used lossy format for still images and has no alpha channel. (MDN (opens in new tab))
- MDN recommends lossless formats for screenshots, diagrams, logos and line art, because blurring and coloured fringes around text and sharp edges are very visible. (MDN (opens in new tab))
FAQ
JPG to PNG FAQs
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG is an exact copy of the JPG as it is now, so any blur or blocky patches stay. What PNG gives you is protection from further loss: you can edit and save it many times without it getting worse. To get better quality you would need the original, higher quality source file.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel exactly, including grain and fine colour changes that JPG smooths away. In our test, a 300.6 KB photo-style JPG became a 2.71 MB PNG at the same 1920 × 1920 size. Photos grow the most. Screenshots and flat graphics grow far less.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. JPG cannot store transparency, so there is nothing to carry over, and a white background stays white in the PNG. To make the background see-through, convert to PNG first and then remove the background in an image editor. The PNG can hold that transparency once it is added.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The JPG is read and converted inside your browser using its built-in canvas feature, and the PNG is created on your device. Nothing is sent to Technical Adda or any other server, which makes it safe for ID cards, documents and personal photos.
Can I convert many JPG files to PNG at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many JPG or JPEG files as you want. Each one is converted separately, and when two or more are ready a Download all (ZIP) button saves them in one file. Large batches of big photos can use a lot of memory, so split very big jobs on older phones.
Is JPEG to PNG the same as JPG to PNG?
Yes. JPEG and JPG are the same format with two spellings of the file extension. This tool accepts files ending in .jpg and .jpeg and treats them the same way. The PNG output is identical whichever extension your file had.
Should I convert JPG to PNG for my website?
Usually not for photos. A PNG photo can be several times larger than the JPG and loads slower with no visible gain. Keep JPG for photos, or use WebP for smaller files. PNG is the better choice for screenshots, logos, charts and graphics with text, where sharp edges matter.
Does the PNG keep my photo's EXIF data?
No. Camera details such as phone model, date taken and GPS location are not copied into the PNG, because the browser creates a fresh file from the pixels alone. This is useful if you want to share a photo without location data. Keep the original JPG if you need that information.
