Contabo is the VPS company everyone mentions when you ask for "maximum RAM for minimum money". Its entry plan gives 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM for roughly the price of a 1 GB server elsewhere, and it now has a data centre in Mumbai. But Reddit threads are full of mixed opinions about speed, support and hidden costs. This Contabo VPS review sorts out the facts for Indian users: current plans and prices in euros and approximate rupees, the Mumbai location fee most people miss, what independent benchmarks actually show, how support works, honest pros and cons, who should buy Contabo and who should pick an alternative like Hostinger VPS, DigitalOcean or Oracle's free tier.

Quick answer: Contabo is worth it if you need lots of RAM and storage cheaply for Docker, n8n, staging sites, bots or backups, and can manage a Linux server yourself. As of October 2026, Cloud VPS 4 (4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM) costs €5.50/month excl. VAT, plus about €2.40/month for the India region. Skip it for business-critical sites needing consistent disk and network speed.

Contabo at a glance

Contabo is a German hosting company founded in 2003. It sells unmanaged Cloud VPS, Cloud VDS (dedicated cores), dedicated servers and object storage. Its selling point has always been simple: more CPU cores, RAM and disk per euro than almost any other provider.

Contabo VPS pricing (October 2026)

Contabo's Cloud VPS prices below are from the order configurator on contabo.com (opens in new tab), checked on 10 October 2026. They are per month, in euros, excluding VAT, for the default EU region. Longer terms give 15% (12 months) or 20% (24 months) off, and you pay for the whole term upfront.

Plan vCPU RAM Storage (SSD or NVMe) Port 1-month term 12-month term 24-month term
Cloud VPS 4 4 8 GB 100 GB SSD 200 Mbit/s €5.50 (~₹596) €4.68 (~₹507) €4.40 (~₹477)
Cloud VPS 6 6 12 GB 200 GB SSD / 100 GB NVMe 300 Mbit/s €7.50 (~₹813) €6.38 (~₹692) €6.00 (~₹650)
Cloud VPS 8 8 24 GB 300 GB SSD / 150 GB NVMe 600 Mbit/s €14.00 (~₹1,518) €11.90 (~₹1,290) €11.20 (~₹1,214)
Cloud VPS 12 12 48 GB 400 GB SSD / 200 GB NVMe 800 Mbit/s €25.00 (~₹2,710) €21.25 (~₹2,304) €20.00 (~₹2,168)
Cloud VPS 16 16 64 GB 500 GB SSD / 250 GB NVMe 1 Gbit/s €37.00 (~₹4,011) €31.45 (~₹3,409) €29.60 (~₹3,209)
Cloud VPS 18 18 96 GB 600 GB SSD / 300 GB NVMe 1 Gbit/s €49.00 (~₹5,312) €41.65 (~₹4,515) €39.20 (~₹4,249)

₹ figures are approximate, at ₹108.40 per euro (ECB reference rate, 9 October 2026). Your bank's exchange rate and foreign-transaction markup (often 2 to 3.5% on Indian cards) will change the final rupee amount. All prices exclude tax: when your country is set to India, Contabo's order summary adds 18% tax (shown as "+ 18% VAT", matching India's GST rate on cloud services), so Cloud VPS 4 at €5.50 becomes about €6.49 (~₹704) per month.

Important: Contabo sometimes shows promotional "first 24 months" prices on its plan listing page that are lower than the configurator. Always confirm the final total on the order summary before paying. Renewals must use the same term length as your initial order.

Contabo also sells Performance VPS (faster CPUs and NVMe at a higher price) and Cloud VDS (dedicated physical cores, starting around €49/month). If you need consistent CPU speed, those lines are worth comparing, but this review focuses on the popular Core Cloud VPS plans.

Contabo India: Mumbai location and location fee

Contabo announced its India data centre in Mumbai on 11 June 2024 (reported by VPSBenchmarks (opens in new tab)). For Indian visitors, a Mumbai server means much lower latency than Germany, which matters for websites, APIs and remote desktop use.

The catch: non-EU regions carry a monthly location fee, and it scales with the plan size. In the configurator on 10 October 2026, the India region added (excl. VAT):

Plan Base price (1-month, EU) India location fee Total with India (1-month)
Cloud VPS 4 €5.50 +€2.40 €7.90 (~₹856)
Cloud VPS 6 €7.50 +€3.70 €11.20 (~₹1,214)
Cloud VPS 8 €14.00 +€7.40 €21.40 (~₹2,320)
Cloud VPS 12 €25.00 +€13.20 €38.20 (~₹4,141)

India fees above are as shown in Contabo's configurator with India selected as the country, before tax. Your order summary is the final word.

So on the entry plan, choosing Mumbai raises the monthly cost by over 40%. It is still cheap for 8 GB RAM, but the "₹500 for 8 GB" headline only applies to the EU region on a long term.

Should Indian users pick Mumbai or Germany?

  • Pick Mumbai for websites with Indian visitors, WhatsApp/Telegram bots used in India, Remote Desktop and anything interactive.
  • Pick EU (free location) for backups, background jobs, crawlers, staging sites, VPN exit nodes for Europe, or projects where an extra 150+ ms of latency does not matter.
  • Use a CDN like Cloudflare in front of an EU server if you want to save money on a website with mostly static content.

Setup fees, add-ons and hidden costs

Contabo used to charge setup fees on monthly terms. In October 2026, the configurator shows "No Setup Fee" on all three term lengths for Cloud VPS. Still, watch these add-ons, which can quickly change the price:

  • Region fee for India, US, UK, Singapore, Japan and Australia (see above).
  • Windows Server licence: a monthly add-on that scales with vCPU count (€53/month on Cloud VPS 12 in our configurator check). For Windows, a smaller plan or a provider with cheaper licensing may make more sense.
  • Auto Backup: automatic daily backups (€6.70/month on Cloud VPS 12). Snapshots are free but are not a replacement for off-server backups.
  • Control panels: cPanel and Plesk cost extra per month.
  • Extra storage: doubling SSD space costs a few euros per month.
  • Additional IPv4 addresses and private networking are paid extras.

Payment methods: Contabo bills in euros, US dollars or British pounds, and you can pick the currency on the site. According to Contabo's help centre (opens in new tab), EUR orders can be paid by card, PayPal, Skrill, bank transfer or direct debit (for qualifying customers), while USD and GBP orders accept only card and PayPal. UPI, RuPay-only cards and cryptocurrency are not listed, so Indian users need a credit or debit card enabled for international online transactions, or PayPal.

Contabo VPS performance: what independent tests show

We have not run long-term benchmarks ourselves, so this section relies on independent testing by VPSBenchmarks (opens in new tab), which grades plans from A (best) to F (worst) in each category. Note that these grades compare raw performance and do not factor in Contabo's much lower price.

Plan tested (date, location) Web CPU Stability Disk IO Network
Cloud VPS Plus 4 at €13.50 (Jul 2026) B B C D D
Cloud VDS S at €49 (Oct 2026) C C B C E
Cloud VPS 18 at €49 (Sep 2026) E B F E D

Source: VPSBenchmarks Contabo comparison and trial pages, accessed 10 October 2026.

What this means in plain words:

  • CPU is a strength. Raw CPU grades are B on the plans tested. You get many cores for the money.
  • Disk and network are weaker. Disk IO grades are C or lower across plans, and network grades D or E. Database-heavy sites and file-heavy apps may feel slower than on premium providers.
  • Consistency varies. VPSBenchmarks gives Contabo a provider consistency score of 56, below the 65 it treats as high, and the Cloud VPS 18 trial scored F for stability. This matches a long-running community reputation that Contabo hosts are busy and performance can fluctuate. Treat that as reputation, not a measured fact for your specific server.
  • Provisioning is quick. Contabo says most VPS options are set up in minutes, though some software images take longer.

Vendor claims vs reality: Contabo's homepage advertises 99.996% uptime, free DDoS protection and "unlimited traffic" (subject to a fair-use policy). These are Contabo's own claims; port speeds (200 Mbit/s on the entry plan) are the real limit on how much traffic you can push.

Support, control panel and ordering experience

  • Support: Contabo offers support by email/ticket and phone. Public reviews on sites like Trustpilot are mixed: some users praise quick replies, others complain about slow responses. Do not expect hand-holding with Linux problems. It is an unmanaged service.
  • Control panel: The customer panel lets you reinstall the OS, take snapshots, use a VNC console (useful when you lock yourself out of SSH), manage reverse DNS and view invoices. It is functional rather than modern.
  • Ordering: You choose plan, term, region, storage type and OS image (Ubuntu, Debian, Alma, Rocky, Windows, plus one-click apps and panels). Some orders can go through an extra verification check before the server is delivered, which can delay first-time buyers.
  • Access: You set a root password at checkout and can add SSH keys later. New to this? Our guide on how to connect to a VPS using SSH covers Windows, Mac and Android.

Hostinger prices are promotional prices for long prepaid terms from hostinger.com/in; DigitalOcean from its pricing page; Oracle limits from our Oracle guide. All change often.

  • Hostinger VPS is the easiest choice for Indian beginners: rupee pricing, UPI, an India location and a friendlier panel. Its promo prices need long terms and renew higher. Read our Hostinger review for the details.
  • DigitalOcean costs more per GB of RAM but has excellent documentation, per-second billing (capped at the monthly price), a Bangalore data centre and steady performance, so it suits developers and short tests.
  • Oracle Cloud Always Free is unbeatable at ₹0 for learning, if you can get capacity; see our Oracle Cloud free tier guide.
  • Want managed hosting instead? Cloudways handles the server for you at a higher price.

How to buy Contabo VPS from India

  1. Choose your plan on Contabo's Cloud VPS page and click Get Started.
  2. Pick the term. Start with 1 month to test performance from India; move to 12 or 24 months only once you are happy.
  3. Select the region. Choose Asia (India) for Indian visitors, or the free EU region for background workloads.
  4. Choose storage (SSD for more space, NVMe for faster disk where offered).
  5. Select the image. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is a safe default.
  6. Set a strong root password. Use a password manager; see our strong password examples guide.
  7. Skip add-ons you do not need, but consider Auto Backup for anything important.
  8. Check the order summary for region fee, add-ons and the total due today, then pay with an international-enabled card or PayPal.
  9. Wait for the welcome email with your IP, then connect by SSH, add your SSH key, update the system and enable the firewall.

What to weigh before you pay for Contabo

  • Cloud VPS 4 gives 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM for €5.50/month (excl. VAT, 1-month term), or 20% less on a 24-month term.
  • Mumbai adds €2.40/month on the entry plan, and the fee grows with plan size (€13.20 on Cloud VPS 12).
  • No setup fee on Cloud VPS as of October 2026, but Windows, Auto Backup and control panels are monthly add-ons.
  • VPSBenchmarks grades CPU well but disk IO, network and consistency lower.
  • Good for Docker, n8n, bots, staging and backups; a poor fit for busy stores or Linux beginners.
  • Want UPI and rupee billing? Look at Hostinger. Per-second billing? DigitalOcean. Zero cost? Oracle's free tier.

Contabo VPS review verdict: who should buy it

Contabo comes down to one trade-off: unbeatable RAM and CPU for the money, in exchange for average disk and network performance, extra fees for the Mumbai region and an unmanaged, no-frills experience. If you run Docker apps, automations, bots or staging sites and know Linux, Contabo is excellent value. Start with a 1-month term and test. If you want rupee billing, UPI and an easier start, look at Hostinger instead. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Contabo VPS good?

Contabo VPS is good value if you need lots of RAM, CPU cores and storage cheaply and can manage Linux yourself. Independent VPSBenchmarks tests show solid CPU performance but weaker disk, network and consistency scores. It suits Docker apps, n8n, bots, staging and backups better than high-traffic business websites that need steady speed.

What is the price of Contabo VPS in India?

As of October 2026, Contabo Cloud VPS 4 costs €5.50 per month excluding VAT on a monthly term, or about ₹596 at ₹108.40 per euro (9 October 2026), before 18% tax. Choosing the India (Mumbai) region adds about €2.40 per month, making it around €7.90. Twelve-month and 24-month terms give 15% and 20% off. Card exchange markups change the final rupee cost.

Does Contabo have a data centre in India?

Yes. Contabo announced a data centre in Mumbai in June 2024, and the India region is available for Cloud VPS, Cloud VDS and dedicated servers. It carries a monthly location fee on top of the plan price, for example about €2.40 on Cloud VPS 4. Indian visitors get much lower latency than from Contabo's German servers.

Does Contabo charge a setup fee?

As of October 2026, Contabo's configurator shows no setup fee for Cloud VPS on 1-month, 12-month or 24-month terms. Older reviews mention setup fees on short terms, which no longer appear for these plans. Add-ons such as the India region, Windows licence, Auto Backup and control panels still cost extra every month.

Why is Contabo so cheap?

Contabo does not publish its cost model, but the usual budget-host levers are visible: unmanaged service with limited hand-holding, prepaid terms without hourly billing, and capped port speeds. You get many resources on paper, but independent tests show disk and network performance below premium providers, and performance can vary between servers.

Is Contabo better than Hostinger VPS?

Contabo gives more RAM and CPU for the price, which is better for Docker, automation and background workloads. Hostinger VPS is better for most Indian beginners because it offers rupee pricing, UPI payments, an India location and a friendlier panel. Hostinger's low prices need long prepaid terms and renew higher, so compare total cost.

Can I pay for Contabo with UPI or RuPay?

No. Contabo's help centre lists card and PayPal for USD orders (plus Skrill, bank transfer and direct debit for EUR orders), with no UPI option. Indian customers usually pay with a Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card enabled for international online transactions, or with PayPal. Expect a foreign-transaction markup from your bank. If you want UPI payments, an Indian-billing host like Hostinger is easier.

Is Contabo good for WordPress?

Contabo can host WordPress fine for blogs and small sites, especially with caching and a lightweight stack. For busy WooCommerce stores, weaker disk IO and variable performance can slow page loads. Use Mumbai for Indian visitors, add a CDN, and consider a provider with faster NVMe and consistent performance for business-critical shops.

Is Contabo good for Windows VPS?

Contabo offers Windows Server, but the licence is a paid monthly add-on that grows with the number of vCPUs, so large plans get expensive. For light Windows tasks like a trading terminal or remote desktop, a small plan in the Mumbai region can work. Test with a 1-month term before committing to a longer plan.

What are the best alternatives to Contabo?

Hostinger VPS is the best alternative for Indian beginners thanks to INR billing, UPI and an India location. DigitalOcean suits developers who want per-second billing and steady performance from Bangalore. Oracle Cloud's Always Free tier is best for learning at zero cost, and Cloudways suits people who want a managed server.
